Peles Castle in Life magazine in 1940
In February 1940 Margaret Bourke-White’s first female war photographer made for LIFE magazine, an impressive series of photographs from Romania. Among them, many are dedicated to Peles Castle in Sinaia. Photos capture the exteriors and the interiors of a castle built at the wish of King Carol I, between 1873 and 1914 . Peles domain with its buildings (Peles Castle, Pelişor and Foisor) were built from personal money of King Carol I, who has sold a possession in Germany to pay the costs of land and raising Castle.
