For a period of about 150 years, the Principality of Transylvania was recognized as an independent state in the Middle Ages. During this period, the princes of Transylvania were released a considerable amount of gold and silver coins , among the most spectacular of their time . These coins have become rare since the period 18-19 centuries . One of the most important collections belonged to Constantin Orghidan which was donated to the Romanian Academy in 1944 .
